[ Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia ]
Last Friday night, I was approached by a couple of friends here in the Mongolian capital to create the pitch video for their Indiegogo campaign, Project Ger. The basic gist of Project Ger is easy enough to outline:
- Ulaanbaatar is the coldest capital city in the world,
- Winter is a dangerous, often deadly, proposition for the city’s homeless,
- Providing a few gers (traditional nomadic tents), and constructing them on land guaranteed by Mongolian law, would save lives and make a permanent difference for a lot of people
It is a bleak story, and there are very few government services in place to deal with the problem.
On Saturday, through the first hard snow of the year, we drove into UB’s ger districts to interview and film some of the at-risk families. It was a cold, dreary, miserable day. I spent Sunday collecting additional footage, finalizing a concept, and putting together a rough edit. By Monday, we had rights to the song, some drone shots (contributed by another friend) and a halfway decent final(ish) product.
It’s far from perfect, and it could have gone many other directions. Still, for a ~48-hour, start-to-finish piece? I’m kinda happy with it.
Enjoy.
