En Route to the Sahara

[ Guelmim, Morocco ]

Happy Monday!

It only took me three easy-riding days to get from Tiznit to Guelmim, even with a full 24-hour stop in Mirleft. So here I sit…next stop the Sahara. For the purposes of this post, though, you should know Mirleft is where I had planned to begin and end this entire two-year journey. And even though things worked out differently, I couldn’t visit Morocco—much less ride south into the desert—without making a stop here. If you look at the gallery I think you’ll see why.

Guelmim, on the other hand, is where the next big leg of this journey begins. Its claim to fame is as the starting and ending point of trans-Saharan camel caravans—stretching back centuries. If you wanted to go to Timbuktu (and boy do I), then you’d have to hop on a caravan out of Guelmim.

Due to current political SNAFUs, I probably can’t go to Timbuktu, but I am about to cross the Sahara, and this is where that journey of necessity begins. I’m here an extra day being lazy, catching up on posts (you’re welcome!) and trying to coordinate things so I’ll find myself camping in the Deep Dark Nowhere in time for the January 31st Super Duper Blood Flood Moon Tune. Or whatever it’s called.

Hope you’re all well, dear Transglobalistas.
Sincerely,
—jim
