Chhath Parva

[ Varanasi ]

Days four and five of my stay saw thousands of the faithful lining up along the road outside my guesthouse–spending the night outdoors, on the pavement, in order to receive blessings the next morning. The festivities began officially around sunrise, and people moved through the temporary queues for hours without pause. Tens of thousands of people. Naturally I started photographing their feet, because India is a place where they are on constant, varied display.

It was a day spent on the street enjoying the food, the endless haggling, the faces of random passersby, the piles of shoes and debris, the cows, and the decorated gods along the avenue.
